I'm a twenty something childcare worker with a degree in creative writing. I've spent the last 8 years working with kids aged 3-15. I've help found and run several arts and literacy programs, though now I work at a center that's more general in focus.
I have ADD and a unspecified reading and writing based learning disability. I was lucky enough to have encouraging and supportive parents who pushed to get me tested and found aid for me when my school didn't provide what I needed. It's too easy for me to remember the frustration and embarrassment I felt when focusing and reading and writing were so hard for me and teachers made fun of me and told my parents I was lazy. I also remember my pride and joy when I finally started to see letters as words and sentences expressing thoughts and stories.
Naturally, my own experiences have greatly informed my opinions on child literacy and the programs in place in and outside schools. I created this blog to get other adults thinking about children and reading and writing. Hopefully this will help them help the children in their lives.
